What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD?)
Children diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) exhibit atypical anger, tantrums, disobedience to authority figures, and intentional injury to others. Although all children occasionally engage in these activities, children diagnosed with ODD exhibit severe variations of these behaviors for at least half a year.
Parents frequently feel helpless in the face of their child's behavior and do not know how to support them. Children, particularly those between the ages of two and three and those in their early teens, frequently act in opposition to or defiant of authority. They could argue, disobey, or talk back to adults as ways to show their defiance. If your child exhibits this behavior for longer than six months and goes beyond what is typical for their age, it may be a sign of ODD.
What is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder?
Most kids and Adolescents with ODD also suffer from at least one additional mental illness, such as ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), a frequent neurodevelopmental issue. Children diagnosed with ADHD frequently struggle with impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention. Children are typically diagnosed in their early years, and the illness frequently persists until maturity.
It is important to note that these disorders are not limited to adolescents. With growing mental health concerns, many adults recognize their ongoing struggles may be related to undiagnosed ADHD. At Embark, our counselors can understand your symptoms and help discover any undiagnosed issues impacting your professional career and delaying possible educational goals.
