ADHD and ODD
hildren diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) exhibit atypical anger, tantrums, disobedience to authority figures, and intentional injury to others.
Adjustment Disorders
Adjustment disorder arises when a person must cope with a specific stressor or traumatic event.
Depression
Depression is categorized as a medical illness and can manifest as feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, or sadness. Depressive individuals may have trouble remembering things and have negative eating or sleeping patterns.
Gender and Sexual Identity
Sexual orientation refers to the people one finds attractive and are drawn to on a romantic, emotional, and sexual level. Gender identification refers to who one is — male, female, genderqueer, etc.— rather than who one is attracted to.
Grief and Loss
After a sudden traumatic event, such as the sudden or expected loss of a loved one, it is common to experience an intensely sad period. This feeling is called “grief” and goes beyond typical sadness; grief and loss can feel overwhelming.
OCD and Tic Disorders
OCD is typically a lifelong or chronic disorder, albeit with time, symptoms may sporadically recur. With obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), one can experience undesirable thoughts and feelings on a regular basis (obsessions), which push you to engage in repetitive actions or compulsions.
Self-Harm and Suicidal Ideation
While self-harm cannot be clinically diagnosed as a mental illness, it does cause emotional distress in parents and partners and can be indicative of underlying mental health concerns. Some people only self-injure themselves once. Others find it difficult to break the cycle.
Trauma and PTSD
Trauma is a universal phenomenon. People from all backgrounds, ethnicities, socioeconomic classes, ages, genders, and sexual orientations can be impacted by trauma. From experiencing a life-threatening event to a sudden death to abuse, trauma can occur in many different forms in our daily lives.
